Facts about Xarelto

Xarelto is a blood-thinning drug that is used to treat blood clots, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary embolisms. It has been sold by Bayer HealthCare and Janssen Pharmaceuticals since 2011.

Xarelto is an FDA-approved drug in a new generation of anticoagulants that are marketed as alternatives to warfarin. Warfarin has been a mainstay of anticoagulation therapy since the 1950s.  If a bleed occurred with the use warfarin, an antidote is administered that will clot the blood and stop the bleeding.  The antidote to use for such a bleed is Vitamin K.

The problem is that Xarelto has no effective reversal agent — unlike warfarin, which can be reversed. In a traumatic accident or during a cerebral hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain), doctors may struggle to stop bleeding in a patient on Xarelto. There have been some studies that have also linked Xarelto to a higher risk of bleeding for acutely ill patients. Several lawsuits claim the drug-makers are downplaying the bleeding and blood clots risks of Xarelto.

Xarelto Increasing Adverse Reports

As the usage of Xarelto increases in the United States, many Xarelto uncontrollable bleeding lawsuits are being filed.  In the first quarter of 2013, ISMP (Institute of Safe Medicine Practices) found 680 serious adverse event reports associated with rivaroxaban, the generic name for Xarelto, compared to 528 complaints for dabigatran, the generic name for Pradaxa.
